A BEACON OF HOPE FOR MARINE WILDLIFE
SR3 SeaLife Response + Rehab + Research in Des Moines, Washington is the Pacific Northwest’s only facility dedicated to the rehabilitation of marine wildlife. Opened in spring 2021, the nonprofit organization addresses the rising challenges faced by marine animals in the Salish Sea, which have surged in recent years. Whereas, fifty years ago, it was typical to find two stranded whales or dolphins per year, in the past decade, there have been nearly 40 strandings per year.
Before SR3 was established, there was no permitted facility capable of caring for and rehabilitating endangered marine animals, nor was there anywhere with the capacity to safely hold adult seals, sea lions, sea otters, or harbor porpoises. Thus, the center fills a crucial need in supporting the health of our ecosystem.
MISSION:
RESPONSE: Highly skilled workers find and save stranded or injured marine wildlife throughout the Pacific Northwest, including disentangling sea lions and whales from ocean trash and fishing gear.
REHABILITATION: When necessary, sick or injured marine animals are brought to the center, where they are nurtured until they can be safely released back into the wild.
RESEARCH: The center conducts crucial research on the health of Southern Resident killer whales and other cetaceans, informing conservation efforts. By understanding the impacts of pollution and environmental changes, they play a crucial role in monitoring marine ecosystem health.
COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT: To foster public involvement in conservation initiatives, SR3 partners with other nonprofits and local communities. Educational programs aim to reduce human-wildlife conflict, ensuring both marine and human communities thrive together.
EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMS: The center offers workshops and volunteer opportunities that encourage community members to participate actively in marine conservation. Check their website for seasonal events and educational sessions.
