Best Spots To See the Colors of Fall in Seattle Southside
Break out the sweaters and cozy up with a mug of something warm, it's finally autumn! Even though we think of summer as the traditional time to get outside in Seattle Southside, the fall is a great time of year to go for a scenic hike or just to watch the leaves fall.
Brisk breezes and beautiful autumn colors make any walk through the autumn leaves a joy, but where do you go to see the best autumn leaves and fall foliage in Seattle Southside? And, almost as importantly - where do you go afterwards to refuel and warm back up? We've paired some of our favorite places to see the beautiful fall colors with a place nearby to grab a bite to eat.
Saltwater State Park
A sandy beach getaway on the edge of Washington's largest urban area, and the park is only two miles from I-5. Set on a stretch of shoreline between Tacoma and Seattle, Saltwater is one of the most popular Washington state parks. While you won't often have the beach to yourself on a warm summer day, Saltwater State Park is ideal in the fall when crowds dwindle and the colors of fall come out in full display.
Then, head over to Candice's Vietnamese Kitchen for a steaming hot bowl of pho. The best selling pho special comes heaping with steak, brisket, meatballs and more, while the vegetarian option comes with a number of fresh veggies and crispy fried tofu. The recently renovated interior is warm and welcoming - so much so that some people even post up with a book or laptop over lunch.
Des Moines Beach Park
Des Moines Beach Park is a great place for a picnic or a stroll along Puget Sound during the summer months, but don’t underestimate the beauty of the park during fall (or even winter). The cool, crisp air and the walking path through the dense forest along the Des Moines Creek Trail makes for a delightful autumn day.
After your visit, stop by nearby restaurant Quarterdeck, where you can sip coffee with a fresh pastry while overlooking the water. Or, sit down for a full meal (the grilled cheese sandwich is a favorite). The menu also includes craft beer and cider, as well as an extensive wine list centered on Washington wines. Depending on when you go, you might even catch live music, wine tasting or a trivia night. Bonus: It's dog-friendly on the deck.
Highline SeaTac Botanical Garden
The Highline SeaTac Botanical Garden is a hidden gem among hidden gems. It’s a quiet, peaceful oasis; something that you might not expect to find so close to the airport. Soothe your soul in the landscaped gardens and relax near the running waters of the artificial river. Take a moment to appreciate the beautiful, Japanese Seike Garden, which may be even more beautiful in full, fall color.
For a hearty meal nearby, head down the street to Sharp’s Roasthouse. For a quintessentially PNW experience, warm up with a bowl of made-to-order King Salmon Chowder, or try the Northwest pasta with smoked salmon.
Seahurst Park
The drive to Seahurst Park is an experience in and of itself. The lush, green (or in this case, orange, red, & yellow) forest creates a natural tunnel, which opens up to a beautiful scene on Puget Sound. Walk along the beach and soak in the natural beauty with all your senses. You’ll see the Fauntleroy ferry shuttling passengers to and from Vashon Island, wildlife like the great blue heron, smell the salt and fresh water converge, and feel the cool breeze coming inland.
When you’re ready for a break, drive to Smarty Pants Garage, a motorcycle racing themed restaurant known for their sandwiches (which are all amazing). And don’t underestimate the homemade soups, including the veggie and meat chilis.
Fort Dent Park/Interurban Trail
The former site of a Civil War-era military installation is now the destination for a leisurely stroll or a soccer match. Walk alongside the soccer fields of Starfire Sports and onward to the Interurban Trail, where you’ll cross bridges over the Green River and see plenty of fall color on your way.
Walk a couple miles and find yourself at one of the most popular Japanese restaurants in the region, Arashi Ramen. On a cold, fall day, you just can’t beat a bowl of authentic, Japanese ramen for lunch. The rich pork broth and thick noodles are a staple of dining guides and itineraries, and for good reason.
Angle Lake Park
Enjoy the crisp fall air at Angle Lake Park, where you can catch some of the best views the region has to offer. This 10-acre lakefront park is located minutes away from the Angle Lake Link Light Rail station, is perfect for a quick walk, even if you don't have much time. It has an awesome playground where kids can burn off steam, and multiple covered picnic shelters you can duck into even if there's a light drizzle.
Afterwards, warm up at 13 Coins with a bowl of their hearty French onion soup and cozy up in the high back booths. This local institution is famous for its retro flair, all-day breakfast and massive menu of classic American fare.
Des Moines Creek Trail
The creek rushes by as you stroll along in the crunchy leaves on Des Moines Creek Trail. Warm up at nearby Anthony's HomePort with the Award-Winning Clam Chowder: New England style clam chowder with potatoes and bacon.
Redondo Beach
Walk down Redondo Beach to take in the scenery of Puget Sound and the forested shoreline, which is smattered with bright leaves in the fall. You can stroll on the sand, or take the boardwalk for about half a mile in one direction.
After, head up to Marina Mercantile and enjoy wine and charcuterie, or Afternoon Tea with homemade finger sandwiches, scones, cookies and cakes. There are typically seasonal specials brewing, such as "Witches Tea" and "Cozy Autumn Tea."
